INDIANAPOLIS – Josh Terao and Jeric Kasunic earned seeded positions Wednesday when the NCAA announced the seeds and brackets for next week's NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, to be held at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
Terao and Kasunic are part of a five-wrestler squad that American University will send to the nationals, which open on Thursday, March 15.
Terao is seeded 12th at 133 pounds and will wrestle Rico Montoya of Northern Colorado in Thursday's opening round. Terao is 29-8 this season and reached the semifinals at last weekend's Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships.
Kasunic, who like Terao is making his second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, is seeded 13th in the 197-pound draw and will take his team-best 34-5 record into a first-round match with Dustin Conti of Clarion.
Freshman Gage Curry will get an early bout in the 125-pound bracket against 11th-seeded Sean Russell of Edinboro. Curry has a 22-14 record after finishing fourth at the EIWAs, while Russell is 30-5.
Redshirt junior Michael Sprague, now 23-13, will wrestle in the 149-pound bracket and will open against 12th-seeded Ryan Blees of Virginia Tech, who is 22-7.
Fifth-year senior Brett Dempsey, 18-11, was placed in a pigtail round in the heavyweight bracket and will wrestle early in a rematch with Jeramy Sweany of Cornell. Sweany, 19-6, beat Dempsey, 8-0, in a second-round match last Saturday at the EIWAs.
Four Eagle wrestlers earned at-large invitations to the NCAA Nationals, while Kasunic punched his ticket with a fourth-place finish at 197.
