Kasunic's Victory Lifts @AU_Wrestling Past Brown

Kizhan Clarke wrestles against Lehigh

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jeric Kasunic ended a five-match winning streak by Brown with a technical fall at 197 pounds that eventually was the difference in American University's 18-17 victory over the host Bears in a dual match between Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association opponents on Sunday.

The Eagles improved to 4-3 in dual matches with the victory, while Brown fell to 0-2.

Kasunic's 16-0 technical-fall victory included two four-point near falls. The teams were tied at the end of the match at 17-17, but total near-fall points was the tie-breaking criteria that applied and gave American the team victory.

"We escaped with a victory," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "Jeric showed leadership and dominance in his performance today. Ultimately we won because of his bonus near-fall points."

The Eagles trailed 17-0 before the victory by ninth-ranked Kasunic, but reeled off five straight wins of their own.

No. 23 Brett Dempsey broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown in overtime, scoring a 3-1 win over Ian Butterbrodt. Gage Curry carried a second-period escape and riding time to a 2-0 win at 125 pounds, pulling AU within 17-11.

Josh Terao, ranked eighth, had the only takedown in the 133-pound match, scoring in the first period then holding on for a 3-2 victory. Kizhan Clarke tied the match with an 8-4 decision at 141 pounds, using a takedown scored in each period to win the bout and tie the team score.

"Brett came through with a victory over an athlete that beat him at EIWA's last season. We're very happy for Brett and appreciate him digging deep in OT.

"Gage, Josh and Kizhan all came through with wins for us to secure the team victory. It's not an easy place to wrestle from when the added stress of the team result lingers in the balance. I give our five victors respect for going out and earning the win after seeing the first five fall short.

"It was not our best performance, but it got the victory and we move forward onto Navy."

Jack Mutchnik moved up to 149 pounds and lost a tight, 4-2 decision on a third-period takedown by Zach Krause. Eagle freshman Eric Hong also fought tough at 157 pounds, losing 3-1 to 21st-ranked Justin Staudenmayer.

Anthony Wokasch (165) and Conner Allshouse (174) lost major decisions at the next two pairings and Abraham Correa-Medina was edged 2-0 in the 184-pound bout.

American has its first home match of the season on Friday, Jan. 19. Tickets for all AU wrestling home duals can be purchased online by clicking here.
