BETHLEHEM, PA. – Jeric Kasunic opened the match with a 3-1 victory in the 197-pound bout, but sixth-ranked Lehigh earned a 36-2 victory over American University in a dual wrestling match among Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association teams on Friday night.
The Eagles fell to 3-3 in the dual-meet season, while the Mountain Hawks improved to 7-1.
Kasunic, ranked ninth this week by TrackWrestling.com, won his 13th straight bout to improve to 23-3 overall. He is now 6-0 in dual matches this season.
"Jeric battled hard to earn our lone victory on the night," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "I appreciate him digging deep to get that win late in the bout."
The Eagles also got strong performances in some other bouts. Redshirt freshman Kizhan Clarke took 12th-ranked Luke Karam to overtime before losing 2-1 at 141 pounds.
The Mountain Hawks, who also picked up two wins by fall and three major decisions, had eight wrestlers ranked nationally coming into the match.
"Unfortunately we got out-wrestled, and we didn't wrestle as well as we hoped in a number of matches," said Moore. "We live to fight another day, and I hope that day is Sunday. We need a reinvigorated energy and purpose for Brown. We need leadership and to prove to ourselves that we have resolve."
American continues its road trip on Sunday when it faces EIWA-opponent Brown at noon.
The Eagles have their first home dual of the season on Friday, Jan. 19 when they host Navy at 7 p.m. in Bender Arena. Tickets for all AU wrestling home duals can be purchased online by clicking here.
