Dempsey Scores Big Wins as @AU_Wrestling Splits Duals

Josh Terao celebrates after winning a match

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Fifth-year senior Brett Dempsey defeated a pair of nationally ranked heavyweights and was among five Eagles who each won two bouts, as American University split a pair of duals to pen the 2017-18 wrestling season.

Jeric Kasunic, Gage Curry, Josh Terao and Michael Sprague also won a pair of matches on Sunday.

American beat Campbell, 22-10, in its afternoon match, winning the first six bouts and finishing with an overtime victory at 184 by redshirt freshman Prince Hyeamang.

AU also opened its morning dual with Eastern Michigan with four straight wins, but EMU rallied for a 22-16 triumph.

"I'm very proud of the team's resilience, considering the late disappointment in the Eastern Michigan match," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "For a young team, we rebounded and showed maturity against Campbell.

"Brett had an outstanding day at heavyweight, and his hard work is now paying off with very good wins. Our other double-winners also turned in very solid performances. I'm as happy as a coach can be with a 1-1 record."

Kasunic, ranked 17th nationally, opened the Campbell dual with a major decision at 197 pounds. Dempsey then edged 11th-ranked Camel heavyweight Jere Heino, 6-5.

Decisions by Curry, 13th-ranked Terao, Kizhan Clarke and Sprague gave the Eagles a 19-0 lead over Campbell. Hyeamang ended the match by recovering from an 8-4 deficit to win, 12-10, in the first sudden-victory period.

Against Eastern Michigan, a win by Kasunic was followed by another big victory by Dempsey, who edged 19th-ranked Gage Hutchinson, 6-4.

A major decision by Curry and a win by Terao put AU up 13-0, and the lead was still 16-3 after Sprague's decision at 149. Eastern swept the final four bouts, getting three pins and a major decision to win the dual.

The Camels beat Eastern Michigan, 24-10, in the day's other matchup.

American travels to the Journeymen Round Robin Duals next Sunday in Troy, N.Y.
