Mutchnik Places for AU at Vegas Tourney

LAS VEGAS – Sophomore Jack Mutchnik finished eighth in the 141-pound bracket Saturday to lead American University performances at the 2016 Cliff Keen Wrestling Invitational.

Mutchnik and Josh Terao advanced through Friday's bouts to earn spots in Saturday's early rounds. Terao finished one win away from placing in the 125-pound division.

Midway through Saturday's bouts, American was tied for 19th out of the 35 schools in the team standings.

Mutchnik won his first round Friday,  but lost to fourth-seeded Logan Everett of Army West Point in the second round.

He advanced to Saturday's rounds with a pair of one-point wins, and opened Saturday with a 1-0 win over Mason Smith of Central Michigan, with the lone point coming on riding time. Mutchnik was forced to default his last match due to injury.

Terao also went 3-1 on Friday, with his loss coming in his second-round match. He rallied with a pair of shutouts in the consolation bracket on Friday.

The third-seeded Terao opened Saturday's competition with No. 8-seed Markus Simmons of Iowa State. Terao fell behind 12-1 in the second period before mounting a comeback. He scored 10 points in the third period, but fell 16-14.

"A big congratulations to Jack, who dug deep and continues to prove his status on the national scene," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "Overall we wrestled well and earned some good wins. We fell short of more-place winners but showed progress.

Josh suffered an unfortunate loss in the placing rounds and, even though his hand wasn't raised, we couldn't have been prouder.
"Our younger wrestlers showed grit and heart. With continued commitment, they'll find success. We face a tough Navy squad next Friday. They competed here as well, and we expect a hard battle."

Jason Grimes went 3-2 for the Eagles at 184. After losing his opener, he came back with a major decision and two first-period falls (0:42 over Jerald Spohn of Kent State and 0:53 over Boise State's Kaydn Del Toro) before losing in overtime in his final match.

Michael Sprague lost to the top seed in the 149-pound bracket before winning his next three bouts but losing 5-4 in the last match on Friday.

Michael Eckhart (165) and Brett Dempsey (285) also went 2-2 on Friday in their weight classes. Eckhart's second win came on a 5-3 decision courtesy of a takedown with two seconds left.

American has a dual match with Navy on Friday, Dec. 9, to be held at Mount Saint Joseph's High School in Baltimore at 5 p.m. Tickets for all AU home wrestling matches are available online at www.aueagles.com/tickets.
