WASHINGTON – The American University wrestling team closes out its 2014-15 dual slate this Saturday, Feb. 21, as it hosts George Mason and Northwestern in back-to-back matches.
Due to the threat of inclement weather, start time for the George Mason dual has been pushed forward to 5 p.m., followed directly by the Northwestern dual.
AU enters this weekend with a 7-11 overall record. The Eagles competed in the regional round of the NWCA National Duals last weekend, dropping a 34-3 decision to second-ranked Missouri.
Junior captain John Boyle was the lone AU wrestler to come away with a victory against the Tigers, earning a 3-2 decision over ninth-ranked Joey Lavallee at 157 pounds.
Boyle ranks among the team leaders for the Eagles with a 31-7 overall record on the season. He is rated 19th in the RPI, while ranking 23rd in the latest coaches' panel rankings.
Meanwhile, junior David Terao is ranked 17th by InterMat at 125 pounds with a 32-4 overall record and 17-1 mark in dual action. Terao is also listed at 16th in the latest coaches' panel rankings and is ranked 24th in the RPI.
George Mason enters the weekend with a 10-10 overall record and will host Northwestern on Saturday morning. The Patriots are coming off a 34-3 dual victory over Grand Canyon.
Among the leaders for George Mason are Jake Kettler (HWT) and Greg Flournoy (157), who are both rated in the latest coaches' panel rankings, listed at 29th and 30th, respectively.
Northwestern, receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll, currently holds a 10-8 overall record on the year. The Wildcats defeated Big Ten foe Maryland, 26-18, in Evanston last weekend.
Five of Northwestern's projected starters for this weekend's dual are ranked in the latest InterMat poll, led by Jason Tsirtsis (149) and Mike McMullan (HWT), who are each rated third in their respective weight classes. Pierce Harger is ranked seventh at 165 pounds, while Alex Polizzi (197) and Dominick Malone (133) are ranked 18th and 20th, respectively.
Tickets for Saturday's duals are priced at $9 for adults and $6 for youth under 13. There is also a special group ticket rate of $3 for groups or teams of 10 or more. One admission gets fans into both duals.
