American Faces Columbia, Hofstra in Dual Action

WASHINGTON – The American University wrestling team is back in action Sunday afternoon, as they visit Columbia University for a pair of EIWA duals. The Eagles will face off against the host Lions at 1 p.m., while taking on Hofstra at 3 p.m. 

The Eagles enter this weekend's matches with a 5-4 overall record and 1-1 mark against EIWA competition. American is coming off a 26-15 home loss to Old Dominion, now ranked 19th in the nation.

Freshman Josh Terao led the Eagles against the Monarchs, recording a fall at 133 pounds, while junior David Terao earned a 2-0 decision over No. 20 Brandon Jeske at 125 pounds.

Also earning decisions for American versus ODU were freshman Michael Sprague at 141 pounds and junior captain John Boyle at 157 pounds.

David Terao, ranked 16th in the latest InterMat poll as well as the initial coaches' panel rankings, owns a team-leading 24-3 overall record and 9-0 mark in dual action. Boyle, ranked 23rd in the coaches' panel rankings, has added a 24-5 record on the season, while Josh Terao, who has won his last six matches, is listed 31st in the coaches' panel rankings with a record of 14-7.

Columbia brings a 2-2 overall record and 1-2 EIWA mark into Sunday's dual. The Lions dropped a 29-12 decision to 23rd-ranked conference foe Bucknell on Friday evening.

Among the leaders for Columbia is 165-pounder Tyrel White, who has recorded a team-leading 15 victories on the season, Meanwhile, Markus Schiedel (157), Zack Hernandez (184) and Garrett Ryan (HWT) are all listed in the initial NCAA coaches' panel rankings.

Meanwhile, Hofstra owns a 4-7 overall record and 2-3 mark in the EIWA, and is coming off a 19-16 conference loss to Binghamton last weekend. The Pride are led by Cody Ruggirello, who is ranked 16th at 149 pounds by InterMat, while sophomore Jamel Hudson is rated 19th at 141 pounds.
