AU Wrestling Establishes Sulmonetti Award

AU Wrestling Establishes Sulmonetti Award
The American University Department of Athletics and Recreation is honored to begin a campaign to establish the Brian Sulmonetti Memorial Exemplary Teammate Award.

This award is named in memory of wrestling alumnus and beloved husband, father and friend, Brian Sulmonetti '79, who died on July 25, 2014. Brian's former teammates and classmates remember him as a caring, generous and fun-loving individual who lived that way long after his days as a wrestling student-athlete.

This memorial aims to capture his spirit and keep it as a perpetual example for today's wrestling team and for every Eagle wrestler in the future.
"Brian's academic and athletic journey at American University was one in which he excelled and enjoyed immensely," shared Brian's father Rev. EJ Sulmonetti. "He won various awards and honors in high school, college and in his workplace over the years.

"However, the most important honor was his love and enjoyment with his family, friends and teammates. Though he left us too early, he lived life to the fullest."

American University Wrestling strives to operate in the way that Brian Sulmonetti is remembered. As a student, Brian was a supportive, driven teammate who loved the sport, his friends and made everyone around him better.

As an alumnus, Brian remained close to and followed the team regularly, and always spoke positively of his time on the mat as an Eagle. His kindness, work ethic and character he showed at AU are attributes he continued to display as a lifelong friend, husband and father.

"It means a great deal to have Brian's name on this award," says American wrestling head coach Teague Moore. "The loyalty and commitment he expressed and shared with his teammates and fellow alumni will forever guide and remind us what it means to be a selfless teammate and lifelong friend."

The award will be given annually to the AU wrestler who embodies the attitudes and attributes we remember best about Brian. Awarded by fellow teammates and the coaching staff, the awardee will show a dedication to the team, determined work ethic and above all else, a selfless, supportive spirit that encourages and lifts his teammates.

We ask those who wish to contribute to the award in Brian's name to contact the American University Department of Athletics at 202-885-3104.
