#10 Terao Advances to Quarterfinals at NCAA Championships; #13 Mitchell Remains in the Field After Session 2

No. 10 David Terao and No. 13 Daniel Mitchell advanced to the second day of competition at the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. on Thursday. 

Terao earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a 13-11 decision over Jared Germaine of Eastern Michigan. He registered a reversal and a pair of near fall points to take the lead at the start of the third period and maintained his advantage through the remainder of the match.

Mitchell also advanced to day two after recording a 7-6 decision over Virginia's Zach Nye. He scored the winning takedown with 35 seconds to go and was able to hold off Nye for the win. Blake Herrin was eliminated from the tournament after dropping a 4-3 decision to Pittsburgh's Patrick Tasser. 

The action resumes tomorrow, Friday, Mar. 21 at 11 a.m. EST. Session 3 will feature the quarterfinals as well as two rounds of wrestlebacks.

10th-Seed David Terao – 125 lbs.

Terao struck first in his second round match against Eastern Michigan's Jared Germaine and held a 5-3 advantage at the end of the first period. Germaine fought back, tying it up at 7-all heading into the third period. Terao had a reversal and near fall points to start the third, but Germaine made it a one-point match, 12-11, with under 30 seconds to go. Terao was able to get away and hold off Germaine's attempts at a final takedown as he picked up the 13-11 decision. He will face second-seeded Nahshon Garrett of Cornell in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the EIWA Championship match. 

13th-Seed Daniel Mitchell – 197 lbs.

Mitchell advanced to tomorrow's competition with a 7-6 decision over Virginia's Zach Nye in the wrestlebacks. Mitchell scored the first takedown but Nye was able to tie it up at 4-all at the end of the first period. He went up 5-4 on an escape in the second but Nye knotted it up again with an escape to start the third period. Mitchell had a takedown with 35 seconds to go and held off Nye's attempts in the closing seconds for the 7-6 decision. He will take on third-seeded Morgan McIntosh of Penn State tomorrow.

Blake Herrin - HWT 

Herrin was eliminated on Thursday night after dropping a 4-3 decision to Pittsburgh's Patrick Tasser. Herrin had the first points of the bout on an escape but Tasser had a takedown at the end of the second period for the lead. Herrin tied it up at 3-all on a takedown but Tasser was able to get the escape for the win. He finishes the year with an overall record of 19-16.
