Wrestling Drops EIWA Opener at Rutgers

The American University wrestling team dropped its first EIWA dual of the season, falling, 31-6, at Rutgers on Friday night.

"We did not wrestle our best tonight," said Head Coach Teague Moore. "We are happy that David and Danny were able to pick up wins and hopefully we can bounce back at the Patriot Duals on Sunday."

No. 12 David Terao won the first match for the Eagles, ending Sean McCabe's six-match win streak with a 6-1 decision. Esteban Gomez-Rivera ended up on the short end of a 7-3 decision to Vinnie Dellefave and the win built momentum for the Scarlet Knights, as Rutgers won each of the next seven weight classes.

No. 9 Daniel Mitchell was able to put American back on the board, earning a 6-3 decision over Hayden Hrymack at 197 lbs. No. 19 Billy Smith edged Blake Herrin, 3-1, in the final bout of the night to secure the 31-6 victory for the Scarlet Knights.

The Eagles will head up to Boston, Mass. next to compete against EIWA foes Boston U., Brown and Harvard at the Patriot Duals on Sunday, Jan. 12 beginning at 10 a.m. American will then return to Bender Arena for a tri-meet, hosting Columbia and Gardner Webb at 12 p.m.
