The American University wrestling team dropped its first dual meet of the season to No. 17 Virginia Tech, falling 30-9, on Sunday night.
No. 18 David Terao was edged in a 3-1 decision in overtime by No. 20 Joey Dance but the Eagles bounced back in the 133 lbs. bout. Esteban Gomez-Rivera earned a 2-1 decision in overtime, picking up the escape to secure the win.
American dropped each of the next six bouts. Virginia Tech posted falls at 141 lbs. and 149 lbs. with decisions in each of the next four events.
No. 13 Daniel Mitchell recorded a fall over Chris Penny in 6:34 to give the Eagles its second win of the night. No. 15 Blake Herrin ended up on the short end of a 6-5 decision to Ty Walz in the final bout of the dual.
American opens its home dual meet schedule on Thursday, November 21 when it hosts No. 10 Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m. in the annual Bender Takedown event. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the door or by calling 202-885-TIXX.
