The American University wrestling team opens its dual meet schedule when it travels to Blacksburg, Va. to take on No. 17 Virginia Tech on Sunday, November 17 at 5 p.m.
American competed at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold in its first event of the year, with No. 15 Blake Herrin winning his second straight title at heavyweight. Eight additional wrestlers made the podium with No. 18 David Terao placing second at 125 lbs. and No. 13 Daniel Mitchell finishing third at 197 lbs. John Boyle and Esteban Gomez-Rivera each placed fourth at 157 and 133 lbs., respectively, and Mark Cirello earned a fifth place result at 149 lbs. Keithen Cast also placed fifth at 174 lbs. Marcos Peralta and Spencer Slishman each placed sixth at 165 and 133 lbs., respectively.
Boyle and Cirello each posted four wins at the event with Herrin going 3-0. The Eagles also had seven wrestlers earn bonus points in tournament action, with Cast, Cirello, Gomez-Rivera and Mitchell posting falls.
Virginia Tech is 5-0 in dual meet competition, posting wins over Hofstra, Kent State, Chattanooga, VMI and No. 12 Edinboro.
The Hokies have four wrestlers in the Intermat rankings. Devin Carter is slotted at No. 3 at 141 lbs. and is 5-0 with four falls this year. No. 7 Zach Neibert is 4-1 this year with one technical fall at 149 lbs. Chris Moon is ranked 16th at 165 lbs. and owns a 3-2 record with one major decision on the year. Joey Dance is 20th at 125 lbs. and is 4-1 with one technical fall.
