Three Straight Wins Not Enough as Wrestling Falls to EIWA Foe Columbia

The American University wrestling team dropped its second dual in as many days as it fell to EIWA opponent Columbia, 24-13, on Saturday afternoon.

"Our 4 wins were exciting matches," said Head Coach Teague Moore. "Blake and Esteban dominated their opponents while David and Tom showed great poise while in control of their victories. We fell short in some other matches because our opponents executed early, but we can learn from these losses."

The match opened at 165 lbs. and the Lions took an early advantage with back-to-back major decisions. Thomas Barreiro was able to put the Eagles on the board, earning a 5-2 decision over Drew Rebling.

"Tom went 2-0 on the weekend," Moore said. "He worked very hard this week to make positive corrections from the North Carolina State dual. His effort and energy paid off and I'm very happy for him and proud of his effort."

Blake Herrin bounced back from his first dual meet loss of the season at Hofstra, earning a 12-3 major decision over Chris Mann. David Terao followed Herrin's win up with a 6-4 decision and Esteban Gomez-Rivera brought American within one point in the team standings with a 12-3 major decision over Robert Dyar.

The Eagles dropped the next three bouts, with Kevin Tao ending up on the short end of a 4-3 decision to No. 8 Steve Santos and Mark Cirello dropping a 12-3 major decision to No. 18 Jake O'Hara to close out the match.

American returns to Bender Arena on Sunday, February 3 to host Binghamton at 12 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
