"This match came down to the close bouts and we lost to many of them," said Head Coach Teague Moore. "The bouts at 174, 197 and heavyweight could have gone our way but we were unable to execute the winning takedowns. I'm happy for the matches we won. Kevin Tao fought hard for his victory while Phillip and Thomas Barreiro won on determination and execution of the winning takedowns."
The bout started at 165 lbs. and P. Barreiro put the Eagles ahead with a 7-5 decision over Nick Terdick after trailing at the end of the second period. He earned a takedown after coming up with the escape for a 6-4 lead and held onto his advantage through the remainder of the match.
The Pride tied the match after Keithen Cast dropped an 8-3 decision, but T. Barreiro earned a 4-1 decision over Victor Pozsonyi to give American the 6-3 advantage.
Hofstra earned five straight decisions to secure the match victory. Blake Herrin fell in his first dual meet of the season, ending up on the short end of 3-1 decision in sudden victory overtime.
Kevin Tao earned the final victory of the night for American, posting a 7-4 decision over Cody Ruggirello. The Pride won the final bout at 157 lbs., with Tyler Banks registering a 3-1 decision over Mark Cirello.
American returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, January 26 at 12 p.m. when it takes on Columbia in an EIWA match-up.
