Ganbayar Sanjaa of the No. 9 American University wrestling team has been selected as the AU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics officials announced Monday.
Sanjaa, the No. 4 nationally-ranked wrestler at 157 lbs., earned a second-place finish at the 49th-annual Midlands Championships last week after finishing with a 4-1 record at the tournament. Sanjaa won four straight bouts to begin his run, including a 5-3 decision over the eighth-ranked wrestler, Clarion's James Fleming, in the semifinals. Sanjaa dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 3 Jason Welch of Northwestern in the championship match.
Sanjaa, along with teammate Daniel Mitchell, both spots as Midlands placewinners, becoming the 14th and 15th student-athletes in program history to be honored. This marks the eighth straight year at least one Eagle has finished on the podium and fourth year in a row that more than one has done so. Ten of American's first 13 placewinners went on to earn All-America status at that year's NCAA Championship.
On the season, Sanjaa is 9-1 with three major decisions and two falls. The All-American and Academic All-American a season ago has registered a 35-9 record in his two years at AU with eight pins and five major decisions.
Sanjaa and the Eagles will return to the mat this week in California with a trio of duals. AU will first compete against Cal State Bakersfield this Thursday, January 5 before taking on No. 15 Cal Poly and No. 20 Stanford later in the week.
