Video: #10 Wrestling Scores Big in 43-3 Win Over George Mason

The #10 American University wrestling team ran its winning streak to five Thursday night with a 43-3 victory over George Mason at Bender Arena. The Eagles now stand at 11-4 on the year.

American won nine of 10 weight classes against the Patriots and scored bonus points in six bouts en route to the victory. Corey Borshoff began the night with a forfeit at 125 lbs. before George Mason picked up its lone win at 133 lbs.

#13 Matt Mariacher began a stretch of eight consecutive victories for the Eagles with a 10-1 major decision over Denny Herndon at 141 lbs. The junior led just 2-0 after the first but had already accumulated 2:24 of riding time. Mariacher improved the score to 5-0 with an escape and takedown in the second before scoring an escape and two more takedowns in the third for the win.

#11 Ganbayar Sanjaa followed with a fall at 149 lbs. at the 3:34 mark. Sanjaa led 8-0 heading into the second period after scoring a takedown and two sets of back points in the first. The junior began the second down and quickly escaped, then scored a second takedown and rolled Shohei Takagi to his back to earn the pin.

#1 Steve Fittery put on a show at 157 lbs., scoring 22 unanswered points for a 24-6 technical fall over Jaazia Bethea. Fittery trailed Bethea 6-2 early in the first but used a takedown and nearfall late in the period to take a 7-6 lead. The 2010 All-American went on top 13-6 in the second after a cement mixer led to three back points and then added three more back points before the period expired. In the third he scored a takedown and two nearfalls, and with riding time advantage took the win.

Patrick Graham continued the Eagles dominance with a 12-4 major decision against 165-pounder Aaron Keeton. Graham held a slight 2-0 advantage heading into the second and improved the score to 4-1 before the period was out. The sophomore would score three takedowns and an escape in the third and added riding time advantage for the final margin.

Tanner Shaffer and Thomas Barreiro picked up wins for American at 174 lbs. and 184 lbs., respectively, with Shaffer earning a 3-1 decision over Greg Scott and Barreiro taking an 8-1 decision over Jimmy Webb. Shaffer led the entire way after scoring on an ankle pick in the first period and then rode Webb out in the third to pick up the extra point. Barreiro also took control of his match early with a first period takedown and after two held a 4-0 lead with 3:01 of riding time. The sophomore added an escape and third takedown in the final period to secure the win.

#20 Daniel Mitchell followed Barreiro at 197 lbs. where he earned a win by forfeit.

#6 Ryan Flores closed out the action at heavyweight with a first period fall over Hunter Manspile. Flores threw Manspile for a takedown early in the match and turned him for three back points and a 5-0 lead. The junior would cut Mansfield and score a second takedown before stopping the clock just 2:32 into the match.

Fittery remains unbeaten on the year with his victory and is now 18-0. He has recorded bonus points in 15 of his victories including nine falls, five tech-falls and one major decision. Flores, meanwhile, improves to 12-4 with five falls, two tech-falls and one major decision while Sanjaa now stands at 15-3 with four falls, two tech-falls and two majors.

Mariacher earned his team-leading 22nd victory of the year and is 22-6 overall with a team-best eight major decisions. Mitchell's record moves to 20-5 with Graham now standing at 17-11, Borshoff at 11-8, Shaffer at 10-8 and Barreiro at 9-17.

American will be back in action Sunday, January 30 when it travels to Athens to take on Ohio at 1:00 p.m.
