#4 Mike Cannon and #5 Steve Fittery have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships, highlighting a solid performance by the American University wrestling team on the first day of competition. Four of American's five qualifiers will be competing on the second day of the tournament, setting a new program record.
Cannon won his first round match by fall at the 4:22 mark and returned to the mat in the second round to earn a 9-2 decision. Fittery, meanwhile, earned a 14-4 major decision in the first round and an 8-6 decision in the second. This will mark the third straight year that Cannon has appeared in the quarterfinals and the fourth time in the last five years that American has sent two student-athletes to the round of eight. Fittery, a two-time NCAA Division II National Runner-Up, will be making his first appearance in the quarterfinals.
Cannon's quarterfinals opponent will be #5 Clayton Foster from Oklahoma State while Fittery will face #4 Cyler Sanderson from Penn State. Should Cannon and Fittery both win their quarterfinal matches tomorrow it would mark just the second time in program history that two student-athletes have reached the semifinals. Josh Glenn, '08, and Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov, '06, both reached the semis in 2006 with Glenn placing fourth overall and Abdurakhmanov third.
Kyle Borshoff and Daniel Mitchell will also be competing on the tournament's second day. Both went 1-1 on Thursday with Borshoff earning a 3-2 decision in the first round and Mitchell taking a 10-2 major decision in the wrestlebacks. Borshoff will meet Binghamton's Donald Vinson in the wrestlebacks Friday morning while Mitchell will face Alan Gelogaev from Oklahoma State. American's four student-athletes competing on the second day marks a program record, toping the previous record of three which the team had accomplished three times.
American is currently tied with Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech for 17th place in the team standings with a total of 13.0 points. The team race has remained tight through the first day as the Eagles are still within 4.0 points of 10th place. Iowa is in first place with 34.5 points while Oklahoma State sits in second with 26.0 points.

141 lbs. - Jordan Lipp
Lipp dropped a 3-1 decision to #9 Levi Jones from Boise
State in American’s first bout of the day. Lipp and Jones
went scoreless through the first period before Jones was able to
take a 3-0 advantage in the second with an early escape and late
takedown. Lipp moved the score to 3-1 early in the third period but
was unable to finish any of his shots as Jones earned the final
decision.
Lipp's tournament was cut short in the second round as he dropped a 6-3 decision to Arizona State's Chris Drouin. Lipp trailed 2-1 heading into the second and was able to even the score at two with an escape late in the period. Drouin opened the third period with an escape for a 3-2 advantage and later scored a takedown off a scramble at the edge of the mat to move the score to 5-2. Lipp scored another escape point after the takedown but could not hit a shot before time expired, giving the match to Drouin with riding time advantage, 6-3.
149 lbs. - Kyle Borshoff
Borshoff edged out Clarion's James Fleming in his first
round match by a score of 3-2. Borshoff got in on a takedown in the
first period to take a 2-0 lead but an escape by Fleming near the
end of the period moved the score to 2-1. Fleming scored another
escape point to open the second period, sending the two into the
third period tied at two. A Borshoff escape midway through the
period gave the senior his final 3-2 decision.
Borshoff was knocked out of the championship bracket with a 20-7 major decision defeat at the hands of Iowa's Brent Metcalf, the tournament's second seed. Metcalf took a 6-3 lead over Borshoff in the first period and never looked back, extending his advantage to 10-4 after the second period before earning the final margin of 20-7 in the third.
Borshoff will now face Donald Vinson from Binghamton in the wrestlebacks Friday morning. Borshoff and Vinson met once this season on January 28 with Borshoff taking a 6-2 decision.
157 lbs. - #5 Steve Fittery
Fittery was impressive in his opening round match,
earning a 14-4 major decision over Millersville's Jarrett
Hostetter. Fittery held a 4-1 lead after the first period and then
improved his position with a series of takedowns and back points in
the second and third periods. The junior was able to score two
takedowns late in third period to earn the major decision.
Fittery earned a dramatic 8-6 decision over 12th-seeded Steven Brown from Central Michigan in the second round. The two went into the second period scoreless where Fittery quickly escaped from his down starting position to take a 1-0 lead. A Brown takedown put the Chippewa on top 2-1 but Fittery was able to quickly escape again to even the match at two. A reversal to begin the third period put Brown up 4-2 before a Fittery escape and takedown moved the score to 5-4. Brown would go on top once more with a reversal, 6-5, but Fittery was again able to escape to tie the score at six. With less than 30 seconds remaining Fittery scored his second takedown of the match and rode out the remaining time to secure the 8-6 win.
184 lbs. - #4 Mike Cannon
Cannon made quick work of Michael Larson of Cal State
Bakersfield, earning the fall at the 4:22 mark. Cannon took a 2-0
advantage in the first period with a double-leg takedown and then
rode Larson for more than two minutes to finish off the frame. The
senior then scored a reversal off the opening whistle of the second
period and moved the score to 5-0 with a stalling point assessed
against Larson. Cannon was then able to lock up a cradle and pinned
Larson with 38 seconds remaining in the period.
Cannon returned during the evening session with a 9-2 decision over Virginia Tech's Thomas Spellman. Cannon fell behind early as Spellman scored the first takedown but was able to recover and controlled the action for the remainder of the match. The junior took a 3-2 lead into the second period after scoring an escape and takedown in the first period and then moved the score to 5-2 with another takedown in the second. In the third period he would add an escape point, a third takedown and one point for riding time advantage to gain his final margin.
Cannon's quarterfinal opponent Friday morning will be #5 Clayton Foster from Oklahoma State. The two have not met this season.
197 lbs. - Daniel Mitchell
Mitchell lost to third-seeded Hudson Taylor of Maryland
in his first taste of the NCAA Championships, 6-0. Taylor scored a
takedown in the first period for a 2-0 lead where the score would
remain heading into the second. Mitchell chose to begin the second
period neutral and nearly evened the match at two with a takedown
off a scramble but was not awarded the points before time expired.
Taylor added an escape point and takedown in the third period and
with riding time advantage took the match by the final of 6-0.
Mitchell was solid in his first wrestleback match and took a 10-2 major decision over Central Michigan's Eric Simaz. Mitchell opened the bout with two takedowns in the first period and improved his advantage to 7-1 after the second period with an escape and third takedown. The freshman scored a fourth takedown in the final period and with riding time advantage earned the major decision, 10-2.
Mitchell will meet Oklahoma State's Alan Gelogaev Friday morning. The two have not met this season.
