The American University wrestling team is sending a program-record five student-athletes to the 2010 NCAA Championships in search of the team's best-ever finish at the event. The Eagles will be led into action by two-time All-American Mike Cannon, the fourth seed at 184 lbs., and 157-pounder Steve Fittery who is seeded fifth. American’s lineup will also boast 2009 All-American Kyle Borshoff as well as first-time qualifiers Jordan Lipp and Daniel Mitchell. This year’s tournament is being held at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., March 18-20.

What to Watch For
American will send two national championship contenders and three
potential All-American’s onto the mat in Omaha in search of
the program’s best-ever finish at the tournament. The Eagles
have previously finished as high as 17th, doing so in both 2006 and
2007.
Cannon and Fittery will both be in the hunt for a national
championship as the fourth seed at 184 lbs. and the fifth seed at
157 lbs., respectively. Cannon will carry a 25-1 overall record
into the tournament and has won each of his last 14 matches. 11 of
his victories during this stretch have come with bonus points
including six falls, two tech-falls and three major decisions. The
senior will be making his fourth appearance at the tournament and
is a two-time All-American.
Fittery boasts a 30-2 overall record which includes a 22-match
winning streak and 26 wins with bonus points. The 2009 Midlands
Champion of Champions has posted eight wins by fall, six tech-falls
and 12 major decisions. He was a two-time NCAA Division II National
Runner-Up at Shippensburg University and this year will be making
his first appearance at the NCAA Division I Championships.
Borshoff will be making his third appearance at Nationals and is a
leading contender to earn All-America status at 149 lbs. Borshoff
became American’s eighth All-American at last year’s
tournament with a seventh-place finish and will carry a 24-5 mark
into Omaha.
Lipp and Mitchell will both be making their first appearance at the NCAA Championships. Lipp, a senior, placed second at the EIWA Championships to earn the trip to Omaha. Mitchell, meanwhile, placed fourth at the EIWA Championships and behind Borshoff is only the second true-freshman in the program's history to qualify for Nationals.
How To Watch
The 2010 NCAA Championships will be broadcast live in its
entirety. NCAA.com will provide a live video stream of sessions I
and II on Thursday, March 18. The ESPN family of networks will
begin its coverage of the tournament on Friday, March 19, and will
air sessions III, IV and V live on ESPNU. The finals will air live
on ESPN and ESPN360.com on Saturday, March 20, beginning at 7:30
p.m. ET.
