WASHINGTON – Chris Fanet scored for American University in the second half to even the match, but Colgate won a penalty-kick shootout, 5-4, to win the 2016 Patriot League Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday at Reeves Field.
The match ended in regulation and two overtimes in a 1-1 draw.
The tie moved AU's overall record to 11-5-5 on the season, while the Raiders are now 13-6-2 after the draw. Colgate picked up the PL's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins on Thursday.
Colgate senior Ethan Kutler scored on a penalty kick at the 55:45 mark to put the Raiders ahead after a scoreless first half.
Raiders keeper Ricky Brown saved a penalty-kick attempt from Joe Iraola at 74:16, but the Eagles earned a corner kick on the play. Iraola served the ball into the box and Fanet scored in traffic for the equalizer.
AU held a 20-8 edge in shots in regulation, and Colgate had a 4-2 advantage in shots in the overtimes.
In the shootout, AU put 6-foot-6 freshman Will McCreight in the net. With the shootout tied 2-2, McCreight made a save to give the Eagles an advantage. But Brown made a save in the fifth round to even the shootout.
Oliver Harris put Colgate up 5-4 in the sixth round, and Brown made a save on Dale Ludwig to end the match.
Brown made seven saves in regulation, with Lucas Belanger earning five for the Eagles.
Kutler was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the Tournament. The Raiders also placed Zach Tamen, Jared Stroud and Ricky Brown on the All-Tournament Team.
