Men's Soccer Remains in First Place After 3-0 Win Over Holy Cross

WASHINGTONJake Garcia, Max Holdsworth and Kibu Mbaluku scored for the American University men's soccer team in a 3-0 win over Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon.

American (9-5-4, 6-1-1 PL) controls its destiny heading into the final game of the regular season next weekend at Lehigh. An Eagle win will clinch the PL Regular Season Championship despite any result by Loyola (Md.)

However, If the Eagles can only secure a point on the road and a Loyola defeats Holy Cross, the Greyhounds would win the regular season title host the PL Semifinals and Finals due to tiebreaker rules. Loyola defeated American (1-0) on Oct. 5.

AU got on the board early in the opening half on a corner kick by Joe Iraola that was placed at the feet of Panos Nakhid who sent it over to Garia for the tip-in.

The Eagles scored twice in the second. Holdsworth found the back of the net in the 47th minute off a mishap by the Holy Cross keeper who shanked a clear that was capitalized by the AU rookie. The final goal was a through ball by Nakhid over to Mbaluku in the 67th minute.

American finished with a 15-4 edge in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks.

Lucas Belanger made four saves and HC keeper Bobby Hurstak made one save on four shots on goal.

American travels to Lehigh on Saturday evening. Loyola will travel to Holy Cross for a 1 p.m. game.
