Five student-athletes on the American University men's soccer
team have been selected to the All-Patriot League Teams, conference
officials announced Tuesday. Senior Cooper
Bryant and juniors Nick
Kapus and Mike
Worden were named to the First Team, while senior
Karsten
Smith and junior Daniel
Shannon were selected to the Second Team.
Bryant, a 2008 NSCAA/adidas All-Mid-Atlantic Third Team
selection, has had yet another strong campaign for the Eagles,
anchoring an American University defense that has yielded only 20
goals in 17 games. This is the second time that he has been
selected to the Patriot League First Team, an honor he also
received after the 2008 season.
Kapus also received First Team recognition after starting 15
games in the midfield for the Eagles this year, tallying two goals
and one assist on the season. His five points doubled his
career totals from his first two years, and was amongst the team's
leaders in points, goals, shots, and shots on goal.
This is also the first All-PL selection for Worden, who appeared
in 17 games, with 16 starts for the Eagles this year. He tied
for the team lead in goals with four, all of which were
game-winning goals. His nine points placed him second on the
team and also led the team in shots on goal with 18.
Smith earned his third-consecutive All-Patriot League honor, as
he was named to the First Team in 2008 and the Second Team in
2007. Smith showed his versatility on the field in 15 starts,
both as a key member of the Eagles defense, as well as scoring two
goals on the season.
Shannon was named to his first-career All-PL selection after
leading the team with 13 points and five assists, and tying for the
team lead in goals with four. He started all 17 games in the
midfield for the Eagles, and proved to be the driving force behind
an American University offense that struck for 21 goals this
season.
The Eagles finished up the regular season with a record of 9-6-2
overall and 4-2-1 in Patriot League play, which earned a tie for
second place in the conference. The Eagles will take on the
Lehigh on Friday afternoon in the Patriot League Semifinals, which
are being hosted by Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa.
