Leonard, Worden Lead Men’s Soccer Past Virginia Tech, 1-0

Mike Worden's 51st minute goal was enough to give the American University men's soccer team a 1-0 road victory at ACC foe Virginia Tech on Wednesday night. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Leonard recorded his first-career shutout in the win.

After a scoreless opening half, American (3-3) got on the scoreboard with Worden's first goal of the season. Junior Daniel Shannon was credited with the assist as Worden beat Virginia Tech goalkeeper Brendan Dunn to his right.

Leonard recorded three saves and picked up his first collegiate shutout and second career victory. His other win came in a 2-1 overtime victory over Pennsylvania on October 18, 2006.

Virginia Tech (2-3-2) outshot the Eagles 14-6 in the match, although American held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. Worden led the Eagles with a game-high three shots on goal.

"This was a great team win," commented American Head Coach Todd West. "Ryan Leonard was outstanding in goal. Mike Worden and Danny Shannon created a great goal and the team defending was excellent, especially centerbacks Cooper Bryant and Dor Yasur."

The Eagles will open Patriot League play this Saturday, September 26 at Bucknell. First kick is set for 4 p.m.
