WORCESTER, Mass. — The American University men's basketball team led by seven at the half, but a quick start by Holy Cross in the second half pushed the Crusaders to a 70-64 win over the Eagles in Patriot League play on Wednesday evening at the Hart Center.
With the loss, American dropped to 6-22 overall and 3-14 in the Patriot League with one game remaining against regular-season champion Bucknell on Saturday. Holy Cross improved to 11-17 and 8-9 in the PL. The Crusaders visit Colgate on Saturday.
Larry Motuzis led the Eagles with 21 points. Cheikh 'CB' Diallo and Sa'eed Nelson each finished with 11 points.
The Crusaders were led by Jacob Grandison with 16 points and seven rebounds. Austin Butler had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jehyve Floyd added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists.
American led 38-31 at the half before Holy Cross used a 13-1 run and took a 44-39 lead on a layup by Grandison with 13:32 left to play. A Nelson layup put the Eagles within a possession, 49-47, with 9:56 left. Late in the contest, Motuzis drilled a deep 3-pointer but Floyd answered back with a dunk and Butler made a pair of free throws.
