Nelson Hits Career-Best in Loss at Loyola Maryland, 72-69

BALTIMORESa'eed Nelson set a career-best 31 points but the Loyola Greyhounds held on and led wire-to-wire for a 72-69 win over the American University Eagles on Wednesday evening at Reitz Arena. 

With the loss, American dropped to 5-19 on the season and 2-11 in the PL. Loyola avenged an early-PL loss to the Eagles and are now 8-16 overall and 6-7 in the league.

Stacy Beckton Jr. tied a season-best with 11 points and added three rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes off the bench. 

Loyola finished with five players in double figures, led by Brent Holcombe and Isaiah Hart each with 17 points. Holcombe added nine rebounds and a pair of blocks in 20 minutes off the bench. Andre Walker and Chuck Champion had 12 points each and Cam Gregory rounded out the double figures group with 10 points. 

Loyola led 32-25 at the half after Nelson hit a jumper as time expired. 

American trailed 68-58 with 2:55 remaining in the contest before a 10-4 run cut the contest to a 70-69 mark with 50 seconds left. During the run, American got eight straight points off a layup by Jesse Little, a five-second inbounds violation by Loyola and then back-to-back 3-pointers by Cheikh 'CB' Diallo and Stacy Beckton, Jr. Chuck Champion gave the Greyhounds a three-point edge on a layup with 23 seconds left. Nelson had a chance to tie the game with an inbound under the AU basket with 3.8 seconds left but did not get a shot off before the game expired.

American hosts Lehigh at Bender Arena on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame Day The game can be seen locally on NBC Sports Washington+ and NBC Sports Philadelphia+.
