Nelson Nets Game-High 21 in Loss at Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. — The American University men's basketball team fell 82-70 to Army West Point on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League play at Christl Arena.

With the loss, American falls to 5-18 on the season and 2-10 in the Patriot League. Army West Point upped its record to 13-10, 6-6in the PL. 

Sa'eed Nelson finished with a game-high 21 points and tied his season-best with nine assists. Sam Iorio added 20 points and six rebounds. Larry Motuzis was the third player in double figures for the Eagles with 13 points on 2 of 3 from the outside.

Army West Point saw five players finish in double figures with Matt Wilson leading the way with 14 points. Luke Morrison scored all 12 of his points from the outside on 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Tommy Funk and Alex King added 11 points each and Lonnie Grayson added 10. 

The Black Knights led 40-32 at the break, holding an advantage the final 12:20 of the frame after Babacar Thiombane had a steal which led to a layup and an 11-9 lead.

The Eagles shot 44 percent from the field after 20 minutes. 

Early in the second, American cut the difference to a single possession, but the Black Knights kicked back and retook a double-digit lead the remainder of the contest.

American travels to Loyola Maryland on Wednesday for its next game. The Eagles play next at Bender Arena on Saturday, Feb. 10 against Lehigh.
