WASHINGTON – Sam Iorio posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Sa'eed Nelson also finished with 20 points Thursday as American University defeated Loyola Maryland, 76-65 to earn its first Patriot League men's basketball victory.
The Eagles' win snapped a six-game losing streak, as AU improved to 4-12 and 1-4 in the PL. The Greyhounds fell to 4-12 and 2-3 in the league.
American hit 11 of 17 from 3-point range in the game, including a perfect 6-for-6 on their way to a 39-29 halftime lead.
Iorio's double-double was his fourth of the season and his third in four games. The freshman had four 3-pointers in the game and scored 11 of his points in the second half.
Nelson added seven assists and three steals to his performance, while Larry Motuzis finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Cam Gregory had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead Loyola Maryland, which was held to just 38 percent shooting from the floor. Andre Walker had 16 points and Andrew Kostecka added 13 off the bench.
AU led by as many as 17 points in the first half before finishing with the 10-point edge at the break.
The Eagles' largest lead of the game came at 51-32 with 15:01 to play, but Loyola was able to rally. The Greyhounds cut the deficit to seven points five times in the second half but could come no closer.
American goes on the road for a pair of games, traveling to Lehigh on Sunday at 2 p.m. and Boston University on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
The Eagles' next home game is on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host Lafayette at 2 p.m. American University will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its 2008 Patriot League Championship at halftime of that game.
