WASHINGTON - The American University men's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season to Mount St. Mary's on Monday, 59-56.
The Eagles are now 3-7 heading into the final nonconference contest of the season while the Mount rises to 5-7.
AU was led by Sa'eed Nelson, who hit 19 points on 7 of 21 from the field while bringing down a team-high eight rebounds. Larry Motuzis matched Nelson with eight rebounds and added another 16 points after shooting 6-for-14 from the field.
A 13-point effort from Junior Robinson led the Mount, followed by 12 points from Chris Wray and 10 from Donald Carey. Wray also put up a game-high 12 rebounds for the double-double.
Both teams struggled with shooting, as the Eagles shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the field and Mount St. Mary's hit 39.7 percent (23-for-58). The Mount also led on the boards, bringing down 59 rebounds to AU's 56.
The Eagles led for the majority of the first half, gapping Mount St. Mary's by as much as nine after a 10-0 run. The Mount pushed back in the final five minutes, tying the game at 27-27 with less than a minute left in the half before a free throw from Nelson gave the Eagles a one-point edge heading into the break.
A quick trey from the Mount's Robinson gave them an early two-point lead in the second half and they gained a seven-point lead of their own with 13 minutes left on the clock. A three from Nelson regained a brief two-point lead for AU with five minutes left, but the Eagles were unable to break the Mount's defense down the stretch.
