PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — The American University men's basketball team held an eight-point lead at the half, but Maryland Eastern Shore raced back in the second half en route to a 74-70 win over the Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Hytche Center.
American falls to 2-5 on the season while the Hawks improve to 3-5.
American had three players finish in double figures for the third straight game and was led by Larry Motuzis with 24 points.
Sa'eed Nelson added 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in 40 minutes.
Cheikh 'CB' Diallo dropped 13 points on 5 of 6 from the field.
American played with nine active players on the roster with injuries to Mark Gasperini, Sam Iorio and Marvin Bragg have depleted the AU frontcourt.
The Shore was led by Tyler Jones' 18 points and Miryne Thomas' double-double (17 points and 10 rebounds). The Hawks struggled at the field but made it count from the line (22-for-29).
American trailed 12-2 early in the contest before a 35-14 run put them ahead 37-26 on a Diallo layup with 3:51 left.
The Eagles led 45-37 at the half, shot 53 percent from the field and connected on 7 of 14 from the outside.
AU led 55-43 with 14:40 left before a 24-12 run by the Hawks tied the game with 3:37 left.
American will complete its three-game road trip next Wednesday at Western Illinois. The Eagles' next home game is Saturday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. against Howard.
