MANHATTAN, Kan. — Larry Motuzis led the American University men's basketball team with 17 points in an 83-45 loss to Kansas State in both teams' season opener on Friday evening at Bramlage Coliseum.
American (0-1) trailed 48-19 at the half but held a 5-2 lead early in the contest after baskets by Motuzis and Cheikh Diallo. American struggled to keep pace as the Wildcats used a 14-0 run early on in the first half to put the Eagles behind 19-5.
Kansas State (1-0) finished with five players in double figures, led by Dean Wade with 17 points. Cartier Diarra had 13 points, Makol Mawien added 12 points and Kamau Stokes and Barry Brown each finished with 10 points to round out the Wildcats' o
AU shot 30 percent from the field and 26 percent from the outside.
Kansas State bested the Eagles in all statistical categories. The Wildcats held a 41-23 edge in rebounds, got to the line 21 times with 13 made free throws and hit 12 for 22 from 3-point range.
American will take on No. 11 West Virginia on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
