No. 9 Men's Basketball Falls to No. 8 Army West Point in PL First Round

WEST POINT, N.Y. — The American University men's basketball team went into the half trailing by one, but Army West Point doubled up the Eagles in the second half coming away with the 73-56 win in the Patriot League Tournament First Round on Tuesday at Christl Arena. 

American finishes the season 8-22 and will graduate seniors Charlie Jones, Jalen Rhea, Leon Tolksdorf and Yilret Yiljep

Army West Point will head to No. 1 Bucknell on Thursday.

Senior Charlie Jones finished his career with 14 points, eight rebounds, six steals and three assists. Classmate Jalen Rhea added six points, connecting on a pair from the outside late in the second half. 

Delante Jones had 14 points and three rebounds. Freshmen Sa'eed Nelson finished with nine points and three rebounds and Mark Gasperini had seven points and five rebounds. 

Army West Point was led by Jordan Fox with 23 points. Luke Morrison had 11 and the Black Knights shot 55 percent from the floor. 

Amerian never led in the contest but tied the game on three occasions. Army led 30-29 at the half with American cutting the deficit to four, 38-34, with 14:14 left on a three by Delante Jones

Army pulled away and took a double-digit lead (50-39) after a 12-5 run. The Black Knights took a 19-point lead late in the contest on a free throw by Fox. 

American men's basketball will go idle until August when the team takes a 10-day trip to Australia.
