BALTIMORE — Senior Charlie Jones nailed the game-winning three-pointer with three seconds left to give the American University men's basketball team a 64-62 win over Loyola on Saturday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
American (8-21, 5-13) will travel as the No. 9 seed to No. 8 Army West Point on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. The winner will head to top-seed Bucknell on Thursday for the PL Quarterfinals. Loyola (14-15, 8-10 PL) will be the other host on Tuesday when it welcomes No. 10 Lafayette at 7:30 p.m. The winner of this match will take on No. 2 Boston U also on Thursday.
Delante Jones led the Eagles with a team-high 15 points on 3-of-4 from the outside in 36 minutes. Matt Cimino had another solid outing in his second start. He finished with 12 points and three rebounds. Sa'eed Nelson chipped in 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in 36 minutes.
Loyola got a double-double from Cam Gregory with 20 points and 12 rebounds; Jarred Jones had 13 points and seven assists and Andre Walker had 10.
American led early in the contest with James Washington connecting on an old-fashioned three-pointer to give the Eagles a 7-4 lead at 14:37. Loyola took a 10-point lead, 28-18, with 2:57 remaining on a three-ball by Andrew Kostecka.
Loyola led 28-21 at the break. Both sides struggled with handling the ball with 18 combined turnovers. Cimino had seven points for AU with one of his three field goals coming from deep. Gregory nearly completed his double-double in 13 minutes, scoring 10 points with eight rebounds.
Midway through the second, American cut its deficit to four, 36-32, on a layup by Delante Jones. Loyola pushed the lead back to seven (47-40) on a layup by Gregory. From that points, AU went on a 10-2 run and took the lead on a three by Cimino with 5:16 left.
The lead seesawed in the final 80 seconds until Charlie Jones scored to put the Eagles ahead with three seconds left.
