Despite Gasperini's 20, Men's Basketball Outlasted by Hot-Shooting Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. — Freshmen Mark Gasperini and Sa'eed Nelson each finished with 20 points, but four Lafayette players finished in double figures to lead the Leopards to a 78-65 win over American on Wednesday at the Kirby Sports Center. 

Gasperini's 20 points was a new season-best with 18 of the 20 coming in the second half. Gasperini shot 7-of-14 from the field and made 6-of-11 from the line. 

Nelson had 11 of his 20 in the final frame and shot 9-of-16 from the field in 37 minutes. Charlie Jones added eight rebounds and played a tough defensive contest. The Eagles shot 46 percent from the field and 63 percent from the line. 

Matt Klinewski had 23 points for the Leopards and added eight rebounds. Nick Lindner chipped in 19 with six baskets from the outside. Kyle Stout was the third starter in double figures with 10. Paulius Zalys contributed 15 off the bench in 26 minutes. Lafayette made 10 three's and shot 82 percent from the line.

American trailed by eight at the break, 36-28, and had its largest deficit 57-40 with 11:04 left in the game.

Charlie Jones made it a nine-point contest, 64-55, with 5:32 left in regulation but Lafayette with back-to-back three's. 

The final regular season home game will be on Sunday afternoon at noon against Holy Cross. Before the contest, American will honor its four seniors — Charlie Jones, Jalen Rhea, Leon Tolksdorf and Yilret Yiljep — and the first 1,000 fans will receive a President Neil Kerwin bobblehead, courtesy by GEICO.
