Wagner Spoils Eagles' Home Opener, 73-65

WASHINGTONSa'eed Nelson led the American University men's basketball team with 24 points but a strong performance by Wagner and JoJo Cooper gave the Seahawks the edge, 73-65, on Tuesday evening at Bender Arena.

Mark Gasperini had 19 points and eight rebounds. Delante Jones and James Washington each had eight points. American shot 39 percent from the floor and made eight three-pointers. 

Cooper led Wagner with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Carey had a team-best 22 points and Corey Henson has 18 off the bench. Wagner shot 50 percent from the field and made 16 free throws. The Seahawks outrebounded AU (38-35) and forced 13 turnovers. 

American (0-4) held a nine-point lead (24-15) off a layup by Delante Jones with 8:07 remaining in the first half. Wagner finished the half on a 19-7 run and took a 34-31 lead after Henson hit a jumper with four seconds left.

The Eagles retook a 39-37 lead two minutes into the second half on a three by D. Jones. The Seahawks regained the lead 40-39 on a triple by Henson.

AU cut the deficit to a single possession (55-53) on a three by Leon Tolksdorf with 7:46 left. Wagner then went on a 7-0 run and led 62-53 off a dunk by Carey with 5:06 in the second.

American will host Saint Francis University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
