Delante Jones Selected as Patriot League Rookie of the Year

Patriot League Release

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Freshman Delante Jones was selected as the 2015-16 Patriot League Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year, as announced by the league office on Monday morning. Senior Jesse Reed was tabbed to the Patriot League Second Team after a stellar year with the Eagles.

The voting was conducted by the league's 10 head coaches, who deemed Jones to be the best newcomer among a top notch group.

The Chantilly, Virginia, native came on down the stretch by scoring in double figures in 12 of his final 13 games, and his performance had a great impact for his team as American won nine of its final 12 Patriot League games to finish at .500 in League action after an 0-6 start.

Jones placed eighth in scoring (14.2 ppg) during Patriot League action and in the top 20 for the season at 12.0 ppg, leading all freshman in both categories. He scored 18 points or more eight times during the season, with seven of those coming in Patriot League games.

He becomes American's third Patriot League Rookie of the Year recipient, and first in a decade since Derrick Mercer won the honor in 2006.

Jones earned three PL Rookie of the Week honorees with his final coming to close out the regular-season. The guard averaged 19.0 points in two home victories for the Eagles as he helped American close the regular season on a four-game winning streak and earn a first-round bye in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. Jones scored 20 points while making 5-of-9 field goals and 8-of-12 free throws in a 72-65 win over Navy on Wednesday, and tallied 18 points on 4-of-8 from the field and another 8-of-12 effort at the line in a 67-66 triumph over Loyola on Saturday. He shot 9-of-17 (53.0%) from the field for the week and also averaged 1.5 assists and rebounds per game.

In his final season with the Eagles, Reed is averaging 12.8 points per game to earn his third-straight all-league nod. The Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, native will go down as one of the top 20 scorers in program history. He is currently 16th on the all-time list with 1,375 points and is the PL's second-highest active scorers. In league play, Reed averaged 13.6 points per game and led the team in field goals (82) and three-pointers (35) made.

Reed was also selected to the Academic All-League squad after being named the Scholar-Athlete of the year the past two seasons. The Accounting major carries a 3.41 cumulative GPA.

Reed also earned the GEICO-AU Student-Athlete of the Week after he averaged 17.5 points in a pair of home wins for the Eagles as American finished 9-9 in the Patriot League and earned a first-round bye in the League Tournament.

No. 6 American will travel to No. 3 Boston University on Thursday evening for the Patriot League Quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
