Loyola Game Notes

WASHINGTON — The American University men's basketball team can finish anywhere from fifth to eighth in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. But first, American must face Loyola in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles and Greyhounds are tied for seventh with an 8-9 record in league play.

A 17-0 run in the second-half bolstered AU over Navy 72-65 on Wednesday evening in a wild affair at Bender Arena. Jesse Reed finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Reed shot 3-for-4 from the outside and 4-of-6 from the line. Delante Jones had 20 points on 5-of-9 from the field and 8-for-12 from the line. American shot 53.5 percent from the field, 50 percent from the outside and 63 percent from the line. Charlie Jones contributing six points and nine rebounds and Jalen Rhea adding 10 points.

American's Jesse Reed led all scorers with 20 points, including 16 in the second half and 10 in the final 1:04 of the first meeting between AU and Loyola on Dec. 30 won by Loyola, 76-67. In five games against the Greyhounds, Reed is averaging 16.6 points and 4.2 rebounds.

Loyola forward Jarred Jones had nine points and nine rebounds in the first meeting earlier this season against the Eagles. Jones also added three assists and shot 2-for-5 from the field and made 5-of-6 from the line.

American can finish in either 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th

• American is fifth if … AU defeats Loyola and Navy and Colgate lose.
• American is sixth if …AU defeats Loyola and Navy loses.
• American is seventh if … AU defeats Loyola and Navy wins. The Eagles will host (10) Lafayette on Tuesday.
• American is eighth if…Loyola defeats AU. American will then host (9) Holy Cross on Tuesday.

There are eight different game scenarios that put American directly into the quarterfinals. Five of them see AU at Boston, two have AU at Colgate and one shows AU at Army. If forced to play in the first round, American can only face either Holy Cross or Lafayette.

The Greyhounds already know they will be hosting a first-round contest on Tuesday. They do not know if it will be Holy Cross or Lafayette and if it will be in the seventh or eighth spot. Andre Walker leads the Greyhounds in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game. Jarred Jones is second at 13.8 points and leads the squad in assists at 7.2 per game.

Loyola's Eric Laster hit all four of his shots from the outside and the Greyhounds made 21-of-25 from the line to give the Greyhounds a 75-67 win over American at Reitz Arena. Jesse Reed led all scorers with 20 points, including 16 in the second half and 10 in the final 1:04. The Eagles shot 47 percent from the field and added 17 points from the line and 38 points in the paint. Paris Maragkos had 17 points and freshman Delante Jones had 11 points for the Eagles. Tyler Hubbard led Loyola with 18 points and hit all 10 attempted free throws. Eric Laster had 17 off the bench and made four three-pointers.
