WASHINGTON — Freshman Delante Jones led all scorers with 18 points as the American University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 69-55 home victory over Patriot League-leading Bucknell on Wednesday evening.
American shot 55 percent from the floor and converted on 19-of-25 from the line. The Eagles outrebounded the Bison 33-28 and forced 12 turnovers.
It was a tight battle throughout the first half as neither side taking a lead larger than two possessions. The Bison held an early lead 7-2 on a Ryan Frazier layup with 17:01 left. The Eagles went on a 6-0 run and led 19-13 at the 7:30 mark on a jumper by junior Charlie Jones. Bucknell cut a four-point deficit with 34 seconds remaining in the frame until Washington nailed a jumper with 12 seconds left.
American shot 54 percent from the field in the half and Delante Jones led the Egles with eight points.
The offense picked up for the Eagles in the second half, as the team scored 42 points and broke a 49-49 tie on a three-pointer by Washington with 4:52 left. Two minutes later, Maragkos hit a lead-padding three from the top of the key that got a friendly bounce. American went 10-of-12 from the line down the stretch and took its largest lead (67-53) off a dunk by senior Marko Vasic with 10 seconds remaining.
Bucknell's Nana Foulland led his squad with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Stephen Brown had a team-high 13 points and Chris Hass finished with 10. The visitors shot 37 percent from the floor and went 0-for-15 from the outside.
American will head to Lehigh on Saturday at 7 p.m.
