WASHINGTON — Senior Jesse Reed led the American University men's basketball team to its fourth straight Patriot League win on Monday, 58-45, at Bender Arena.
Reed finished with 16 points to give the Eagles their first home win of the season. The senior guard added five rebounds, four assists and three steals to his stat line and also shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.
Freshman Andrija Matic scored a season-best 11 points off the bench in 20 minutes and grabbed four boards. Classmate James Washington had 10 points and shot 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.
American finished the contest shooting 42 percent from the field, made five three-pointers and connected on 15-of-18 at the line.
American led for the entire first half and led 16-15 after 20 minutes. Washington got the Eagles on the board with a jumper 59 seconds into play. AU took a five-point advantage (9-4) on a layup by senior Marko Vasic off a pass by Matic at 12:23. Later in the frame, Matic gave American a 14-8 lead on the back end of a free throw with 5:14 remaining.
Both sides struggled offensively and shot 29 percent from the field.
In the second half, the offense came alive with a pair of runs by the Eagles that separated them from Holy Cross. Matic scored six straight points to put AU ahead 28-18 with 14:17 left. Holy Cross made a comeback and took its only lead of the game on an 11-0 spurt capped off by an Eric Green layup at 11:27.
AU responded and regained the double-digit edge on a three by freshman Delante Jones with 2:25 left to pad the Eagles' lead to 49-39. American shot 9-for-9 at the line down the stretch to complete the 13-point victory.
Holy Cross guard Cullen Hamilton was the lone Crusader to net in double figures with 18 points. The Crusaders struggled from beyond the arc and at the line shooting 14 and 46 percent, respectively.
American will have a quick turnaround when they host Patriot League-leading Bucknell on Zero Waste Night this Wednesday at Bender Arena at 7:30 p.m.
The first 500 students to arrive at the game will receive a free reusable tumbler, courtesy of Coca-Cola. The tumbler can be used for a $1 fountain drink at the concession stand.
Additionally, all students in attendance will be entered in a raffle to win one of two Coca-Cola-themed bicycles and bocce ball sets. The winner will be announced in the second half and must be present to win.
