HAMILTON, N.Y. — Junior Charlie Jones' defensive efforts pushed the American University men's basketball team to a 54-49 road win against Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court.
Senior Jesse Reed led the Eagles with a game-high 19 points, including a pull away three with 51 seconds remaining to give AU a five-point advantage late in the contest.
Freshman Delante Jones reached double figures for the fourth straight contest and went 10-for-14 at the line finishing with 15 points.
After a sloppy first half across the board, American finished the contest shooting 44 percent from the field with eight trifectas.
Colgate was led by Tom Rivard with 15 points. Austin Tillotson added 10 points for the Raiders.
The Raiders started the contest with a three-pointer by Jordan Swopshire, but Reed answered back on the next possession. Colgate took a four-point lead, 14-10, with 10:58 left in the first half before both sides traded baskets the rest of the half.
American took a 22-21 lead with a hook shot off the glass by freshman Andrija Matic with five seconds remaining.
Reed led the Eagles with 10 points at the half.
Early in the seconds half, it was a see-saw battle until American went on a 13-3 run and led 47-37 off a three by Charlie Jones with 6:32 left.
Colgate made an attempted comeback and cut the deficit to two (49-47) on a three by Alex Ramon with 1:15 left.
The Raiders finished the contest shooting 44 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Eagles, 27-22.
The Eagles will return to Bender Arena on Mon., Feb. 1 to take on Holy Cross in the rescheduled contest from last week. The game is the annual 'Phil Bender District Day' and the first 1,000 fans will receive a voucher for a Mike Brennan Bobblehead, presented by GEICO. All bobbleheads will be given out at the end of the contest against Holy Cross.
