WEST POINT, N.Y. — The American University men's basketball team went into halftime tied with Army West Point, but the Black Knights went on a 20-2 run in the second half and won 65-45 on Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena.
Army West Point (12-6, 3-3 PL) opened up a quick double-digit lead on American, but the pesky Eagles returned the favor with a 22-9 run to end the half, tying the contest at 20 on a three-pointer by junior Paris Maragkos with 5:21 left in the frame. Army's John Emeize regained the lead for the hosts, but Maragkos tied the score for the second time with a layup at 1:48.
Despite a tough opening minutes, AU shot 39 percent from the field with Maragkos and Jones each contributing seven points, respectively. Army's Luke Morrison scored all of his seven points in six minutes off the bench during Army's early spurt.
In the second, American (2-15, 0-6 PL) kept the game within reach for the first six minutes, as Jones cut the deficit to a single possession after making a pair of free throws and a layup at 14:11. From that point, the Black Knights scored 20 of the next 22 points and held their largest advantage late in the game (65-44) on a three by Adam Roe with 1:39 left.
The Black Knights shot 40 percent from the field and outrebounded AU, 42-27.
American shot 36 percent overall and 67 percent from the line after making 8-of-12.
The Eagles remain away from Bender Arena for one more contest, a rematch of last season's Patriot League Championship game at Lafayette on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
American will host Holy Cross next Sunday at 1 p.m. on the American Sports Network. The game is the annual 'Phil Bender District Day' and the first 1,000 fans will receive a voucher for a Mike Brennan Bobblehead, presented by GEICO. All bobbleheads will be given out at the end of the contest against Holy Cross.
