VCU Bests Men's Basketball, 72-44

RICHMOND, Va. — Three players finished in doubles figures for the American University men's basketball team, but a strong VCU squad came away with the win, 72-44, on Wednesday evening at the Siegel Center.

Senior Jesse Reed had a team-high 12 points along with five rebounds. Junior Paris Maragkos and freshman James Washington each finished with 11 points, respectively.

American shot 46 percent from the floor and 8-of-16 from the line.

Melvin Johnson led all scorers with 13 points as VCU also had three players tally double-figure marks. Korey Billbury had 12 points and eight rebounds and Justin Tillman ended with a double-double (10 points and 14 rebounds).

The Rams' offense shot 39 percent from the floor and hit six trifectas with 18 points coming from the line.

VCU led 36-30 at the break after shooting 38 percent from the floor. The Eagles finished the half on a strong note, connecting on five of its last seven shots from the floor.

Charlie Jones finished the half with five points and three blocks. Maragkos also had five points and added two assists. The Eagles fared better than the Rams, connecting on 42 percent of their shots.

VCU's defense forced 16 turnovers which resulted in 10 points off AU mistakes. Inside the paint, VCU scored 20 points and pulled down 22 rebounds with eight on the offense glass leading to 10 second chance points.

VCU held its largest advantage of the frame, 32-11, with 4:02 left, but American trimmed the deficit to 14 on a layup by James Washington with 1:08 remaining.

Johnson had 10 points for the Rams and Tillman contributed six.

In the second half, American shot 50 percent but a game total of 22 turnovers and 29 rebounds kept the Rams ahead for the remainder of the game.

American will travel to New Hampshire on Saturday for a noon tip.
