Men's Basketball Drops Home Opener, 61-48, to Hampton on Tuesday Night

WASHINGTON – The American University men's basketball team dropped its home opener to Hampton, 61-48, on Tuesday evening at Bender Arena. 

With the loss, American drops to 0-2 on the season while Hampton is even at 1-1.

The Eagles had three players in double figures led by Paris Maragkos and Jesse Reed with 12 points and Delante Jones with 10 points. Charlie Jones added six points and eight rebounds. The Eagles shot 41 percent from the field, 25 percent from the outside and 63 percent from the line. 

Hampton was paced by Reginald Johnson with 19 points on 7-of-17 from the field. Jervon Pressley had 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Quinton Chievous has nine points and 10 rebounds. The Pirates shot 47 percent from the floor and made 13-of-19 from the line. 

American led 23-21 at the break after holding its largest lead of seven points after a triple by Delante Jones with 3:56 left. 

Hampton raced out early in the second frame on a 14-2 run to take a 37-25 lead with 14:53 left on a layup by Chievous. 

American cut the deficit to four points (42-38) on a jumper inside by Maragkos with 8:46 left. The Pirates retook a double-digit lead, 48-38, on the backend of free throws by Brian Darden. 

The Eagles took one last crack at closing up the deficit to put the game within two possessions on a layup by Reed with 1:12 left. 

However, Hampton finished the contest on an 11-2 run to capture the 13-point victory. 

American will hit the road on Saturday to face Saint Francis University at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on Federal News Radio 1050 AM.
