KINGSTON, R.I. — Junior Paris Maragkos scored 16 points in his American University debut, but Rhode Island's Four McGlynn and Jared Terrell led the Rams to a 65-42 win on Friday night at the Ryan Center in non-conference men's basketball action.
American is 0-1 on the early season while URI is 1-0.
The Eagles finished the contest shooting 34.8 percent from the field after shooting 45 percent at the break.
McGlynn finished with 15 points off the bench in his debut for URI. Terrell added 14 points on 6-of-14 from the field. The Rams connected on 52.2 percent from the floor.
Rhode Island capitalized in the interior with 36 points in the paint, 10 off second chance and 25 off turnovers.
The Eagles also had success down low with 26 points. Seniors Marko Vasic and Jesse Reed also chipped in seven points each.
American held a pair of three-point leads early in the contest and kept the game within two possessions until Terrell hit a free throw with 4:04 left to give the Rams a 27-20 lead.
Rhode Island went into the locker room with a 13-point lead, 36-23.
In the second half, American cut the deficit from 15 to six points with a 9-1 run (44-38) on a free throw by Maragkos.
The Rams then went on a 12-0 run to make it 58-40 on Jarvis Garrett's layup.
Hassan Martin was the third Ram to finish in double figures with 10 points.
The Eagles will make their home debut in Bender Arena this Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. against Hampton.
