The American University men's basketball team will take on Mount
St. Mary's on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the second game of a
five-game homestand in Bender Arena. The first 1,000 fans in
attendance on Wednesday night will receive a free autographed team
photo courtesty of TEAM AU Corporate Partner Ameritel Corporation.
American owns a 31-26 mark in the all-time series with The Mount
with a 13-5 record at home. Mount St. Mary's, however, took last
season's meeting against the Eagles in Bender Arena, 57-52.
American has dropped two tough games to start this season, losing
65-61 at St. Francis (Pa.) in the opener and 51-50 to Albany on
Monday at home. The Eagles have held the lead at halftime of both
these games but have failed to close out the games late.
Despite the unfavorable results, American has recieved strong play
from several of its student-athletes. Sophomore Stephen
Lumpkins is currently averaging a team-high 11.0 ppg
and 7.5 rpg while classmate Riley
Grafft has notched 10.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg. Sophomore Simon
McCormack has provided 9.0 ppg and 6.5 rpg off the
bench and junior Nick
Hendra has chipped in 6.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
The Eagles' freshman class has also stepped up in the early stages
of the season as Daniel
Munoz, Blake
Jolivette, Daniel
Fisher and Mike
Bersch have all contributed. Munoz has received the
start at point guard in both games, averaging 6.5 ppg and 2.0 apg.
Off the bench, Jolivette has added 6.0 ppg in 13.5 minutes while
Fisher has seen action in both games. Bersch made his debut on
Monday night, playing 13 minutes and scoring two points.
