WASHINGTON – Alaeldin Tirba topped a field of 83 runners to win the men's individual title last Friday at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals, and in the process he picked up this week's honor as the GEICO – AU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Tirba, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, led a 1-3-4 finish by the Eagles in the first cross country event of the year. He covered the 5-kilometer course in 15:30.5, earning a 12-second victory over Ryan DePinto of George Washington.
American finished second at 3-1 in the round-robin dual meet scoring, winning three pairings and losing the fourth by a single point to George Washington.
It marks the first time in his AU career that Tirba has won the weekly GEICO award.
AU Cross Country is off until Sept. 23 when it competes at the Panorama Farms Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia.
