Senior Mark Allen competed at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky., becoming the first American University student-athlete to qualify for the event since 2010 and the first member of the men's team to compete since 2007.
Allen placed 176th in a field of 245 runners, completing the 10k course in a time of 31:22.5. The senior qualified for the meet after his seventh place finish at last week's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and was one of only two representatives from the Patriot League at the competition.
Allen, a 2012 All-Region selection and two-time All-Patriot League First Team selection for cross country, is the first man to qualify for Nationals since Brendan Fennell and current American Assistant Coach Steve Hallinan did so in 2007. Octavia Rinehardt '11 is the last American student-athlete to qualify for the event when she advanced to the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
