Matt Hillenbrand joined the American University cross country and track & field team as an assistant coach in September 2018.

A former professional middle-distance track athlete, Hillenbrand competed for the Adidas Boston Athletic Association High Performance team in Boston, Mass., and the Brooks Beasts Track Club in Seattle, Wash. Hillenbrand was 12th at the 2014 U.S. National Outdoor Track & Field Championships and joins the AU staff with a wealth of knowledge from his time on the professional circuit.

A 2014 graduate from the University of Kentucky, Hillenbrand was a three-time USTFCCCA All-American for the Wildcats and a three-time SEC champion in the mile and 3000-meter run. He was selected as the NCAA Southeast Regional Athlete of the Year and was a gold medalist at the NACAC Championships while representing Team USA. He closed his career with four UK school records and holds the record for the fastest time in the mile run by a Kentucky native (3:57.00). His other personal bests include 1:48.07 in the 800m run, 3:39.84 in the 1500m, 7:59.55 in the 3000m, and 13:49.24 in the 5k.

Hillenbrand earned his B.S. in biology and a minor in Spanish from Kentucky.
