JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– Liam Purdy of American University won't have to wait long to begin action Thursday at the NCAA East Preliminaries.
The Eagle senior will run in Thursday's first of six first-round heats of the men's 800-meter run, scheduled to begin at 8:35 p.m. The meet, which serves as the first two rounds of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, is hosted by the University of North Florida.
Purdy's time of 1:49.95 is ranked 36th among runners entered in the 800 at this meet. There are 36 men who have posted a sub-1:50 mark this season. He posted the mark at the George Mason Invitational and became only the second AU runner ever to break 1:50.
The favorite in Purdy's heat is Mississippi State sophomore Marco Arop, whose qualifying mark of 1:45.50 is the best of the 48 athletes entered in the 800.
In order to advance to Friday's quarterfinal, Purdy would need to finish among the top three in his heat or to post one of the next six fastest times. Should he be one of the 24 runners who reach the quarterfinals, that round would begin at 6:45 p.m. on Friday.
Advancement from the quarterfinals to the national semifinals would take a top-three finish in the heat or the next three fastest times.
Purdy is the ninth Eagle to compete at the East Prelims since the NCAA went to its current format for outdoor nationals.
