CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - American University track & field senior Liam Purdy earned his second Patriot League weekly award of the season as he was selected as the PL Male Track Athlete of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday, April 16.
Purdy became the first AU student-athlete to break 1:50 in the 800-meter run since 2007 with his 1:49.95 finish at Saturday's George Mason Spring Invitational. The Garnerville, N.Y., native continues to close in on the 12-year-old school record of 1:46.92 held by Dustin Emrani. He now owns the No. 2 time in program history outright after previously sitting alongside Sean Duffy with his 1:50.28 personal record (PR) to open the season.
This performance also puts Purdy within qualification for the NCAA Championships Preliminary Round with a No. 27 ranking in the east region. Qualification into the NCAA Preliminary Rounds is based off the top-48 individual performers in each region (East and West).
Purdy has led the Patriot League 800m rankings throughout the majority of the season.
The Eagles will be back in action this weekend with the Morgan State Invitational in Baltimore, Md., on Saturday, April 20. The historic Penn Relays (April 25-27) will close out the season with the Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships following at Navy on May 3-4.
