CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Senior Brianna Belo earned the season's first Patriot League Athlete of the Week nod for the American University track & field team on Tuesday after a record-breaking performance during Saturday's Colonial Relays.
Belo broke her own 800-meter school record in Charlottesville, Va., by a mere 0.01-seconds, leading the field with a final time of 2:07.52. That time not only leads the conference by nearly six seconds but also ranks 30th in NCAA Division I. She also sits within qualification for the first round of the NCAA Championships, ranking 20th in the east region. Only the top 48-performers in each event qualify for the east and west regional meets in May, where they will fight to advance to the NCAA Championship final in Eugene, Ore.
This was the second event win of the season for Belo after she opened her final outdoor campaign with a first-place finish in the 800m run at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She followed that up with a fourth-place crossing in the event at the Raleigh Relays, where she narrowly missed her personal record (PR) with a final time of 2:08.06.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, April 14, at the George Mason Spring Invitational. For the latest on American Track & Field, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_TrackXC.
