CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - American University track and field sophomore Matthew Rainey earned his first Academic All-Patriot League Team nod, as released by the league office on Tuesday.
The Brentwood, Tenn., native holds a 3.60 cumulative GPA as a CLEG (Communications, Law, Economics & Government) major. This is his first Academic All-League honor.
Rainey had quite the sophomore campaign for the Eagles, starting with the program's first indoor Patriot League title since 2009 with the men's 4x800m relay. That squad also surpassed the ten-year-old school record in the event, leading the conference field in 7:31.30.
Rainey's outdoor season ended in similar fashion with yet another winning 4x800m performance at the Patriot League Championships, hitting the eighth-fastest time in program history with a 7:34.64 crossing.
The tenth-fastest 800m runner in AU history with his 1:52.39 personal record (PR) from 2016, Rainey also holds an all-time top ten spot with the men's distance medley with their 9:55.18 finish during the 2017 Penn Relays, good for sixth in the program record books.
